The Troubleshooting Guide That Would Have Saved Me 3 Days
🔧 22 min read • Error Solutions • February 2026
I spent three days staring at error messages. Three days of copying errors into Google. Three days of reading forum posts that didn't help. Three days of wanting to throw my computer out the window.
Then I figured it all out.
This is the guide I wish existed when I started. Every error I encountered, what it actually means in plain English, and exactly how to fix it.

🔴 Installation Errors
Error: "command not found: ollama"
What it means in plain English:
Your computer doesn't know where Ollama is. Either it's not installed, or your computer can't find it.
Most likely causes:
- Ollama didn't install correctly
- You need to restart your terminal
- Ollama isn't in your system PATH
Fixes (try in order):
# Fix 1: Close terminal completely and reopen it
# Then try again:
ollama --version
# Fix 2: Reinstall Ollama
curl -fsSL https://ollama.com/install.sh | sh
# Fix 3: Add Ollama to PATH manually (Linux/Mac)
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/bin
# Then add this line to ~/.bashrc or ~/.zshrc to make it permanent
Error: "curl: command not found"
What it means:
Curl is a tool that downloads things from the internet. You don't have it installed.
Fix:
# On Ubuntu/Debian:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install curl
# On Mac (install Homebrew first if needed):
brew install curl
# On Windows:
# Curl comes with Windows 10+. Use PowerShell instead of CMD.
Error: "permission denied"
What it means:
You're trying to do something that requires administrator/root access.
Fix:
# Add 'sudo' at the beginning of your command:
sudo curl -fsSL https://ollama.com/install.sh | sh
# Enter your password when asked (you won't see it typing - that's normal)
Note: If you're on Mac and get "operation not permitted" even with sudo, you might need to give Terminal full disk access in System Preferences → Security & Privacy → Privacy → Full Disk Access.
🟠 Connection Errors
Error: "connection refused" or "could not connect to Ollama"
What it means:
MoltBot (or whatever you're using) is trying to talk to Ollama, but Ollama isn't listening. It's like calling someone who hasn't picked up the phone.
Most likely cause:
Ollama isn't running.
Fixes:
# Fix 1: Start Ollama manually
ollama serve
# Keep this terminal window open! Ollama needs to keep running.
# Fix 2: Check if Ollama is already running
curl http://localhost:11434
# If you see "Ollama is running" - it's working!
# If you see an error - Ollama isn't running, go back to Fix 1
# Fix 3: Check your .env file has the right address
# It should say:
OLLAMA_HOST=http://localhost:11434
# NOT http://127.0.0.1:11434 (sometimes causes issues)
# NOT https:// (note: http, not https)
# Fix 4: Kill any stuck Ollama processes and restart
# On Linux/Mac:
pkill ollama
ollama serve
# On Windows:
# Open Task Manager, find Ollama, End Task, then start again
Error: "timeout" or "request timed out"
What it means:
The connection is there, but Ollama is taking too long to respond. The request gave up waiting.
Most likely causes:
- First request after starting (model is loading into memory)
- Model is too big for your RAM
- Computer is doing something else heavy
Fixes:
Fix 1: Just wait longer. The first request after starting can take 30-60 seconds while the model loads. Subsequent requests are faster.
# Fix 2: Use a smaller model
ollama pull llama3.2:3b
# Update your .env to use this smaller model
# Fix 3: Increase timeout in MoltBot config (if available)
# In .env, look for or add:
OLLAMA_TIMEOUT=120000
# This sets timeout to 120 seconds (120000 milliseconds)
🟡 Model Errors
Error: "model not found" or "model does not exist"
What it means:
You're trying to use a model that isn't downloaded on your computer.
Fixes:
# Fix 1: Check what models you have
ollama list
# This shows all downloaded models
# Fix 2: Download the model you need
ollama pull qwen2.5:7b
# Replace with whatever model name you're trying to use
# Fix 3: Check for typos in your .env file
# Make sure MODEL_NAME exactly matches the model name from 'ollama list'
# Common typos:
# ❌ MODEL_NAME=qwen2.5-7b (dash instead of colon)
# ✅ MODEL_NAME=qwen2.5:7b (correct)
Error: "out of memory" or "OOM" or "failed to allocate memory"
What it means:
The AI model is too big for your computer's RAM. It's trying to load more than your computer can handle.
This is the #1 reason setups fail.
Fixes:
Fix 1: Use a smaller model
| Your RAM | Max Model Size | Recommended Model |
|---|---|---|
| 8GB | 3B parameters | llama3.2:3b, tinyllama |
| 16GB | 7B parameters | qwen2.5:7b, llama3.1:8b |
| 32GB | 14B parameters | qwen2.5:14b |
| 64GB+ | 32B+ parameters | qwen2.5:32b |
# Check your RAM:
# On Linux:
free -h
# On Mac:
system_profiler SPHardwareDataType | grep Memory
# On Windows (PowerShell):
systeminfo | findstr /C:"Total Physical Memory"
# Fix 2: Add swap space (Linux) - acts as extra RAM but slower
sudo fallocate -l 8G /swapfile
sudo chmod 600 /swapfile
sudo mkswap /swapfile
sudo swapon /swapfile
# Fix 3: Close other programs
# Chrome with many tabs uses tons of RAM
# Close browsers, Spotify, Slack, etc. before running AI
Error: "failed to load model" or "error loading model"
What it means:
The model file is corrupted, incomplete, or something went wrong during download.
Fixes:
# Fix 1: Delete and re-download the model
ollama rm qwen2.5:7b
ollama pull qwen2.5:7b
# Fix 2: Clear Ollama cache and restart
# On Linux/Mac:
rm -rf ~/.ollama/models
ollama pull qwen2.5:7b
# Fix 3: Check disk space - models need several GB
# On Linux:
df -h
# Make sure you have at least 10GB free
🟢 Performance Issues
Problem: Extremely Slow Responses (30+ seconds)
What's happening:
Your computer is struggling to run the model. It's working, just very slowly.
Causes (in order of likelihood):
- Model too big for your RAM (using swap, which is slow)
- First request loading model into memory
- CPU is old or weak
- Other programs using resources
Fixes:
Fix 1: Use a smaller model. Seriously. A fast 3B model is better than a slow 7B model.
# Try tinyllama - it's tiny but fast
ollama pull tinyllama
Fix 2: Keep the model loaded. The first request is always slow. Subsequent requests are faster because the model stays in memory.
Fix 3: Close Chrome. Seriously. Chrome with 10 tabs can use 4GB+ RAM.
Problem: Computer Freezing or Becoming Unresponsive
What's happening:
The AI is using all your RAM and your computer has nothing left for itself.
Immediate fix:
Wait. It might unfreeze after the AI finishes. If not after 2-3 minutes, force restart your computer.
Prevention:
# Use a model that fits comfortably in your RAM
# Rule of thumb: Model should use less than 70% of your RAM
# 8GB RAM → use 3B model (needs ~4GB)
# 16GB RAM → use 7B model (needs ~8GB)
# Set resource limits in Ollama (advanced)
OLLAMA_MAX_LOADED_MODELS=1
OLLAMA_NUM_PARALLEL=1
Problem: Responses Cut Off or Incomplete
What's happening:
The AI hit a token limit or something interrupted it.
Fixes:
# Increase context length in your request
# In MoltBot .env:
MAX_TOKENS=4096
Tip: Ask simpler questions. "Summarize this in 3 bullet points" instead of "Tell me everything about..."
☢️ Nuclear Options (When Nothing Else Works)
Tried everything? Here's how to start completely fresh:
Complete Reset - Uninstall and Reinstall Everything
# Step 1: Stop Ollama
pkill ollama
# Step 2: Remove Ollama completely
sudo rm -rf /usr/local/bin/ollama
rm -rf ~/.ollama
# Step 3: Reinstall fresh
curl -fsSL https://ollama.com/install.sh | sh
# Step 4: Download a small model first to test
ollama pull tinyllama
ollama run tinyllama "Hello"
# If that works, then download your preferred model
ollama pull qwen2.5:7b
🚨 Quick Reference: Error → Fix
| Error | Quick Fix |
|---|---|
| command not found | Restart terminal, reinstall Ollama |
| connection refused | Run ollama serve |
| model not found | Run ollama pull [model] |
| out of memory | Use smaller model |
| timeout | Wait longer, or use smaller model |
| permission denied | Add sudo before command |
| very slow | Close other apps, use smaller model |
